Maine Coon Cats: How to Raise Them Well

Maine Coon Cats: How to Raise Them Well

A cat breed known for its exceptional size, the Maine Coon is a very docile cat that loves communicating with its owners. It needs enough living space to thrive and can only be raised in a suitable, well-equipped setting. Let's take a closer look.

What Is a Maine Coon?

Easy to train and domesticate, Maine Coons are a cat breed from the United States, more precisely from the state of Maine. They're known for their medium-long fur, their large size, their square muzzle and their plumed tail. They also stand out from other cats thanks to their big ears with lynx tips (tufts of fur) at the ends.

Legend also has it that these adorable animals are the result of a cross between a raccoon and a cat. They're extremely sociable and adapt easily to the presence of other pets. They're usually brown, but can also be black, white or cream.

The life expectancy of Maine Coon cats generally ranges from nine to twenty years. Their genetics and the way they're raised and cared for are the main factors affecting their lifespan. Plus, they tend to put on weight or get flabby quickly if their diet isn't high quality and closely monitored. Their food can be homemade, dry (kibble) or wet (trays).

Maine Coons can live just as well in an apartment as in outdoor shelters. Their home must be well equipped and safe to help them thrive. It should also include setups or litter boxes that stop them from doing their business just anywhere. That way, you'll be able to train and educate them much more easily.

Breeding Maine Coons

Gentle, affectionate and calm, Maine Coons need to be raised in the right environment to thrive. This environment must be clean and allow Maine Coon kittens to grow up in good conditions. It should also have facilities (hiding spots, toys...) that help them socialize better and develop their abilities.

To get purebred animals, or beautiful cats with particular traits, you simply need to carefully select the breeding cats. Plus, if you're a Maine Coon breeder, this lets you offer exceptional animals to your customers as well as to prospective buyers.

As for the Maine Coon's diet, it should be balanced and rich in vitamins, fats, proteins and minerals. It should also be low in carbohydrates and adapt as they grow to meet all their needs. In particular, it's recommended not to give dairy products to adult Maine Coons to avoid digestive problems and more. As soon as these animals are weaned off their mother's milk onto a much more meat-based diet, their digestive system stops producing lactase. The absence or gradual loss of this enzyme makes digesting milk very difficult, which can lead to many health problems.

However, by giving your Maine Coon milk regularly, you can encourage their digestive system to keep producing lactase. That way, your precious cat can keep eating dairy products without developing an intolerance or serious health problems.
