Is your cat on Clavaseptin and you want to understand everything about this medication? You are not alone: it is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in feline veterinary medicine. In this guide, we answer all your questions, from the exact dosage to side effects, plus practical tips for getting a reluctant cat to swallow the tablet.

⚠️ Important This article is for information only. It does not replace your vet's advice. Never change the dosage without consulting your vet first.

What is Clavaseptin?

Clavaseptin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the penicillin family. It contains two complementary active ingredients:amoxicillin (the antibiotic) and clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). This combination makes it particularly effective: clavulanic acid neutralizes the resistance mechanisms some bacteria develop against amoxicillin alone, broadening its spectrum of action.

What infections is Clavaseptin for cats prescribed for?

Clavaseptin only works on bacterial infections. It is completely ineffective against viral infections (cat flu, feline leukemia, FIV…). Here are the conditions it most often treats:

  • Urinary tract infections (cystitis, pyelonephritis)
  • Skin infections and infected wounds
  • Bacterial rhinitis and sinusitis
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Mouth infections and gingivitis
  • Dental or subcutaneous abscesses
  • Bacterial ear infections
  • Bacterial digestive infections

Your vet may run an antibiogram (culture and sensitivity test) before prescribing Clavaseptin: this test identifies the bacteria responsible and checks that it is sensitive to the treatment, for maximum effectiveness.

Clavaseptin dosage and administration

The dosage is always set by the vet, based on the cat's weight and the severity of the infection. The usual recommended dose is 12.5 mg/kg twice a day, meaning one dose every 12 hours.

Cat's weight Guideline dose (×2/day) Usual tablet Typical duration
2–3 kg 25–37.5 mg 50 mg (½ tablet) 5 to 7 days
3–5 kg 37.5–62.5 mg 50 mg (¾ to 1 tab.) 5 to 14 days
5–7 kg 62.5–87.5 mg 50 mg (1 to 1½ tab.) 7 to 14 days
Over 7 kg Over 87.5 mg 250 mg (by prescription) As directed by your vet

⚠️ Guideline values only. Always follow your vet's prescription strictly.

With or without food?

Always give Clavaseptin with or just after a meal. This significantly reduces the risk of nausea and vomiting, which are common when the tablet is given on an empty stomach.

How often?

The two doses should be given exactly 12 hours apart to keep a steady blood level and maximize effectiveness. Example: 8 am and 8 pm. If you miss a dose, give the tablet as soon as possible, unless the next dose is due in less than 2 hours: in that case, simply wait for the next one and do not double the dose.

How to split the tablets?

Use a pill splitter (sold in pharmacies for about €3) to get accurate half or quarter tablets. Avoid crushing them in water, as moisture degrades the active ingredients. Cut the tablet just before giving it.

Clavaseptin side effects to watch for

Clavaseptin is generally well tolerated, but side effects can occur, especially at the start of treatment or on an empty stomach:

  • Vomiting (especially on an empty stomach)
  • Mild to moderate diarrhea
  • Temporary loss of appetite
  • Short-lived lethargy
  • Nausea
  • Excessive drooling

These symptoms are usually temporary and go away when the medication is given with food. If they last more than 48 hours, see your vet.

🚨 See a vet immediately if you notice: Swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulties, hives, seizures, bloody diarrhea or jaundice. These allergic reactions are rare but require urgent veterinary care.

Can you stop Clavaseptin before the end?

The answer is no, in almost every case. Even if your cat seems better after 3 or 4 days, stopping an antibiotic too early carries two major risks:

Risk 1: relapse. The most resistant bacteria may have survived and multiply as soon as treatment stops, often causing a more severe infection than the original one.

Risk 2: antibiotic resistance. Partial exposure to antibiotics promotes the emergence of resistant bacteria, making future infections much harder to treat.

Good to know If your cat has significant side effects (repeated vomiting, refusing food), call your vet before making any decision. They can adjust the dosage or suggest an alternative.

How to get a reluctant cat to swallow the tablet

This is often the most dreaded part! Here are the methods, from simplest to most technical:

  • 1
Hide it in food Bury the tablet (whole or crumbled) in a small amount of very tasty wet food or canned tuna. Make sure your cat eats all of that portion before serving the rest.
  • 2
Wrap it in a treat "Pill pocket" treats are specially designed to hide tablets. A bit of cream cheese (Philadelphia), butter or tuna mousse also works very well.
  • 3
Give it directly Wrap your cat in a towel, gently tilt its head back, open its mouth and place the tablet at the back of the tongue. Close its mouth and blow lightly on its nose to trigger swallowing. Finish with a small syringe of water.
  • 4

Clavaseptin for cats FAQ: your common questions

Can you stop Clavaseptin partway through treatment?
As a rule, no. Completing the full course is essential to avoid relapses and bacterial resistance. If significant side effects appear, consult your vet before stopping: they can adjust the prescription.
Giving the pill is hard: my cat spits out the tablet, what should I do?
First try hiding the tablet in canned tuna or a strong-smelling wet food. If that doesn't work, a pill gun is often the most effective solution for very reluctant cats. Ask your vet for a demo.
How long before you see an improvement?
The first improvements usually appear after 48 to 72 hours. For urinary tract infections, some owners report a clear improvement by day 2 or 3: appetite back, more active behavior, less difficulty urinating. If nothing changes after 4 to 5 days, see your vet.
Clavaseptin 50 mg: how do I calculate my cat's dose?
The standard dose is 12.5 mg/kg twice a day. For a 4 kg cat: 4 × 12.5 = 50 mg morning and evening, so one 50 mg tablet twice a day. For a 3 kg cat: about ¾ of a tablet. Always follow your vet's prescription.
My cat vomited after the tablet: should I give the dose again?
If vomiting occurs within an hour of the dose, it probably was not absorbed. Contact your vet to find out whether you should give the tablet again. To avoid this problem, always give the medication with a meal.
Can you give Clavaseptin without a prescription?
No. It is a prescription-only veterinary medication. Using it without a diagnosis can mask a serious condition and promote antibiotic resistance. Always see a vet before any treatment.
Can Clavaseptin interact with other medications?
Yes. Interactions are possible with other antibiotics or anticoagulants. Always tell your vet about every treatment your cat is on (medications, supplements, parasite treatments) before starting Clavaseptin.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
Give the tablet as soon as you remember, unless the next dose is due in less than 2 hours. In that case, wait for the next dose. Never double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Caring for your cat day to day

A successful course of antibiotics is also a chance to reinforce good habits. Preventing infections starts with regular dental hygiene, quality food and yearly vet visits.

Also think about identifying your cat. Recovering cats are sometimes disoriented and more likely to run off. A personalized collar with its name and your phone number can make all the difference.
