Fluoxetine for Cats (Prozac): Effects and Precautions for Aggressive or Depressed Cats

Aggressive cat fluoxetine

Antidepressants are drugs in the SSRI class (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). They have become popular in veterinary medicine thanks to their effectiveness in treating behavioral and mood disorders in pets. The best known are: Fluoxetine (Prozac® in humans), Citalopram, Paroxetine and Sertraline.

These medications must be used under a vet's supervision, but it is also important for cat owners to understand the key features of this treatment. Let's look at how they are used, their side effects and the precautions to take.

When to use an antidepressant like fluoxetine for cats?

This molecule is often prescribed to cats to treat the following behavior problems:

1. Anxiety

An antidepressant can be used to treat anxiety in cats, including separation anxiety, noise-related anxiety (such as fear of thunderstorms) and other anxiety disorders.

2. Compulsive disorders and house soiling

These medications can also be used to treat compulsive behaviors in cats, such as excessive licking, scratching or compulsive chewing of the tail or paws.

In some cases, they can also help your pet stay clean and stop eliminating outside the litter box.

3. Aggression

In many cases, medications such as fluoxetine are prescribed to reduce aggression in cats. This treatment has proven effective, although other behavioral and therapeutic approaches are often used alongside it.

4. Depression

This treatment may be considered to help animals suffering from depression, especially if it is linked to grief or a major change in their environment (such as a move).

Possible side effects

Like any medication, antidepressants can cause side effects in your furball. It is essential to see a vet before starting treatment and to watch your four-legged companion closely during treatment. Common side effects may include:

1. Drowsiness

Some cats may become drowsy or lethargic while taking the medication. This can affect their daily activity level.

2. Loss of appetite

Some animals may lose their appetite while on the treatment, which can lead to weight loss. It is essential to monitor your pet's eating during treatment.

3. Agitation

In rare cases, some cats may become more agitated or anxious. If you notice your cat's condition getting worse, please contact your vet.

4. Gastrointestinal problems

Gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting or diarrhea may occur.

5. Allergic reactions

Although rare, allergic reactions can occur. If you notice signs such as severe itching, facial swelling or breathing difficulties, see a vet immediately.

How to give an antidepressant to your pet?

Before starting treatment, you must consult a vet. Then follow a few steps to make sure the treatment goes smoothly.

1. Dosage

The recommended fluoxetine dose for cats is generally 1 to 2 mg/kg orally once a day. For a 5 kg adult cat, this equals 5 to 10 mg.

Be sure to follow your vet's dosing instructions carefully.

2. Monitor behavior

During treatment, watch your pet's behavior closely for any changes. Report any side effects to your vet.

3. Never stop abruptly

It is important never to stop the treatment suddenly without consulting your vet. S topping it may be considered if your pet has behaved normally for more than three months. In that case, a gradual tapering will be set up with your vet, reducing the dose step by step.

4. Contraindications

Fluoxetine or any other antidepressant is not recommended if your pet suffers from anorexia or epilepsy. Taking CBD products is not compatible with taking antidepressants.

Fluoxetine and antidepressants for cats: your frequently asked questions

How long does fluoxetine take to work in cats?
Fluoxetine does not work immediately: it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to see an improvement in behavior, sometimes longer. So it is important not to stop the treatment too early and to check in with your vet after a few weeks.

Can you give human Prozac to your cat?
No, never without veterinary advice. Fluoxetine is indeed the active ingredient in Prozac, but the dosage of human tablets is not suited to a cat's weight. Only your vet can prescribe the right dose and form.

Is there an over-the-counter antidepressant for cats?
No: in France, antidepressants for animals are available by prescription only. For mild stress , your vet may suggest non-prescription alternatives such as pheromone diffusers or certain calming supplements.

What about Effexor (venlafaxine) in cats?
Venlafaxine is not a standard treatment for cats, and accidental ingestion can cause serious problems. If your cat has swallowed a tablet, contact your vet immediately.

Supporting an anxious cat day to day

Treatment always works better in a reassuring environment: high hiding spots, regular routines and short play sessions every day. An anxious cat also tends to run off when frightened: if it goes outdoors, consider identifying it with a personalized cat collar engraved with your phone number, so it can be brought back to you quickly.

Bonjour

Audrey
